Arany János Letészem a lantot – I lay down the lyre – Ich lege meine Laute nieder

Arany János (Janoš Aranj)
Nagyszalonta 1817. március 2. – Budapest 1882. okróber 22.

Letészem a lantot

Letészem a lantot. Nyugodjék.
Tőlem ne várjon senki dalt.
Nem az vagyok, ki voltam egykor,
Belőlem a jobb rész kihalt.
A tűz nem melegít, nem él:
Csak, mint reves fáé, világa.
Hová lettél, hová levél
Oh lelkem ifjusága!

Más ég hintette rám mosolyját,
Bársony palástban járt a föld,
Madár zengett minden bokorban,
Midőn ez ajak dalra költ.
Fűszeresebb az esti szél,
Hímzettebb volt a rét virága.
Hová lettél, hová levél
Oh lelkem ifjusága!

Nem így, magánosan, daloltam:
Versenyben égtek húrjaim;
Baráti szem, művészi gonddal
Függött a lantos ujjain; -
Láng gyult a láng gerjelminél
S eggyé fonódott minden ága.
Hová lettél, hová levél
Oh lelkem ifjusága!

Zengettük a jövő reményit,
Elsírtuk a mult panaszát;
Dicsőség fényével öveztük
Körűl a nemzetet, hazát:
Minden dalunk friss zöld levél
Gyanánt vegyült koszorujába.
Hová lettél, hová levél
Oh lelkem ifjusága!

Ah, látni véltük sirjainkon
A visszafénylő hírt-nevet:
Hazát és népet álmodánk, mely
Örökre él s megemleget.
Hittük: ha illet a babér,
Lesz aki osszon... Mind hiába!
Hová lettél, hová levél
Oh lelkem ifjusága!

Most... árva énekem, mi vagy te?
Elhunyt daloknak lelke tán,
Mely temetőbül, mint kisértet,
Jár még föl a halál után...?
Hímzett, virágos szemfedél...?
Szó, mely kiált a pusztaságba...?
Hová lettél, hová levél
Oh lelkem ifjusága!

Letészem a lantot. Nehéz az.
Kit érdekelne már a dal.
Ki örvend fonnyadó virágnak,
Miután a törzsök kihal:
Ha a fa élte megszakad,
Egy percig éli túl virága.
Oda vagy, érzem, oda vagy
Oh lelkem ifjusága!

I lay down the lyre

I lay down the lyre. None should now
Expect a song of me – that’s done.
I’m not as I was long ago.
The better part of me has gone,
Fire will not warm, its feeble light
Is dead bark burning in a hole.
Where are you life? O life in spite –
Where is the springtime of my soul?

Another sky was bright with smiles,
Birds on fresh boughs crowed fit to burst,
Velvet covered the earth for miles
When last my lips to singing pursed.
The night wind scented with delight
I saw bright flowers down acres roll.
Where are you life? O life in spite –
Where is the springtime of my soul?

My last song was not sung apart:
My lyre burned in desire of praise;
My friends looked on and knew my art –
They knew well how the strings should blaze;
From flame to flame we rose in flight
Till each tongue echoed to the whole.
Where are you life? O life in spite –
Where is the springtime of my soul?

We sang the hopes of years to come,
Lamented years that long had passed;
Our countrymen, our nation home
We wreathed in glory that should last;
Each song was a green leaf curled tight
Within the laurel’s fiery scroll.
Where are you life? O life in spite –
Where is the springtime of my soul?

And ah, how we presumed to see
The light of fame above our tombs:
Dreamt country and community
Whose hearts might nurture our frail blooms.
Thought if the laurel fit there might
Be some to crown us – a vain goal.
Where are you life? O life in spite –
Where is the springtime of my soul?

My orphaned song, what are you now?
The soul of ballads long deceased?
What ghost comes forth to mop and mow?
Whose spirit has the grave released?
What eyelid weary for the night...?
What word at some dry waterhole...?
Where are you life? O life in spite –
Where is the springtime of my soul?

I lay down the lyre. Such dead weight!
Who cares for songs now anyway,
Or loves pale flowers that bloom too late
Once mighty trees have died away?
The tree being dead the folded bud
May briefly flourish on the bole,
I sense your doom deep in my blood
O vanished springtime of my soul.

Translated by George Szirtes

Ich lege meine Laute nieder

Ich lege meine Laute nieder,
stumm ruhe sie in Zukunft hier.
Ich bin nicht mehr, der ich gewesen,
mein beßres Ich erstarb in mir.
Ein falsches Licht ist nur das Feuer,
die Wärme schwand, verschwelte ganz...
Wohin bist du entflohn, entschwunden,
du meiner Seele Jugendglanz?

Es lächelte ein andrer Himmel,
die Erde war in Samt gehüllt,
aus jedem Strauch drang Vogeljubel,
als diesen Mund Musik erfüllt.
Der Abendwind war voller Würze,
reicher der Wiesen Blütenkranz...
Wohin bist du entflohn, entschwunden,
du meiner Seele Jugendglanz?

Ich sang nicht einsam, so wie heute,
oft glühten meine Saiten heiß
im Wettstreit mit dem Freund, der sorgend
auch um die Kunst des andern weiß.
Feuer entbrannte so an Feuer,
verwebte sich zum Flammentanz...
Wohin bist du entflohn, entschwunden,
du meiner Seele Jugendglanz?

Wir sangen von der Zukunft Hoffnung,
beweinten auch vergangnes Leid,
und mit dem Kranz des Ruhms umgaben
wir unsre Heimat jederzeit.
Und jedes Lied flocht sich als frisches
Blatt in des Vaterlandes Kranz...
Wohin bist du entflohn, entschwunden,
du meiner Seele Jugendglanz?

Wir sahn im Geist auf unsren Gräbern
sich widerspiegeln Ruhm und Ehr,
wir träumten uns ein Volk, unsterblich,
das stolz auf seine Dichter wär!
Wir glaubten, wenn es uns gebühre,
gäb man uns auch den Lorbeerkranz...
Wohin bist du entflohn, entschwunden,
du meiner Seele Jugendglanz?

Was seid ihr jetzt, ihr armen Klänge?
Die Seelen toter Melodien,
die aus dem Friedhof wie Gespenster
noch nach dem Tode geisternd ziehn.
Vielleicht die Stimme in der Wüste,
ein Leichentuch, ein Totenkranz...
Wohin bist du entflohn, entschwunden,
du meiner Seele Jugendglanz?

Ich lege meine Laute nieder.
Sie wiegt zu schwer. Wen kümmert auch
das Lied? Wen freut die welke Blüte
am toten Ast, am dürren Strauch?
Wenn eines Baumes Leben endet,
Erstirbt auch bald die Blüte ganz...
Für alle Zeit bist du entschwunden,
Du meiner Seele Jugendglanz!
