William Wordsworth (Portrait by R Carruthers)

Daffodils
I wandered lonely as a cloud
That floats on high o'er vales and hills,
When all at once I saw a crowd,
A host, of golden daffodils;
Beside the lake, beneath the trees,
Fluttering and dancing in the breeze.
Continuous as the stars that shine
And twinkle on the milky way,
They stretched in never-ending line
Along the margin of a bay:
Ten thousand saw I at a glance,
Tossing their heads in sprightly dance.
The waves beside them danced; but they
Out-did the sparkling waves in glee:
A poet could not but be gay,
In such a jocund company:
I gazed--and gazed--but little thought
What wealth the show to me had brought:
For oft, when on my couch I lie
In vacant or in pensive mood,
They flash upon that inward eye
Which is the bliss of solitude;
And then my heart with pleasure fills,
And dances with the daffodils.
That floats on high o'er vales and hills,
When all at once I saw a crowd,
A host, of golden daffodils;
Beside the lake, beneath the trees,
Fluttering and dancing in the breeze.
Continuous as the stars that shine
And twinkle on the milky way,
They stretched in never-ending line
Along the margin of a bay:
Ten thousand saw I at a glance,
Tossing their heads in sprightly dance.
The waves beside them danced; but they
Out-did the sparkling waves in glee:
A poet could not but be gay,
In such a jocund company:
I gazed--and gazed--but little thought
What wealth the show to me had brought:
For oft, when on my couch I lie
In vacant or in pensive mood,
They flash upon that inward eye
Which is the bliss of solitude;
And then my heart with pleasure fills,
And dances with the daffodils.
Táncoló tűzliliomok
Sétáltam, mint felhő, melyet
szél hajt céltalan, könnyedén,
s egyszer csak egy sor, egy sereg
aranyliliom tűnt elém,
a tó partján, a fák alatt
ringtak, táncoltak, álmatag.
Ahogy csillaggal a tejút
ragyog s hunyorog mindenütt,
a szikrázó kis öblöt úgy
körüllobogta ünnepük;
lángszirom, táncos, büszke fej
hintázott ott vagy tízezer.
Tűztánc volt a tó is, de ők
túltündökölték a vizet, -
költő ily társaság előtt
csak boldog s vidám lehetett!
Néztem, - néztem, - nem tudva még,
hogy mily gazdaggá tett a kép;
mert, ha merengő éjeken
lelkem most önmagába néz,
gyakran kigyúl belső szemem,
mely a magány áldása, és
megint veletek lobogok,
táncoló tűzliliomok.

Sunovrati
Ko oblak samotan sam lutô,
Što dol i briješke gleda s visa,
Kad spazih mnoštvo razasuto
U beskraj zlaćanih narcisa;
Kraj jezera, pod drvećem,
Lahor s tim se igrô cvijećem.
Ko zvijezde sjajne što trepere
U Mliječnoj Stazi preko svoda;
U beskraj njihov red se stere,
Uz zaton, gdje ih rubi voda.
Moj pogled jedan: tisuće su,
Što njišu se u vrelom plesu.
Talasi kraj njih plešu bijeli,
Ali nenadmašno igra cvijeće:
Mora se pjesnik da veseli
U društvu takve pjane sreće!
Gledam – gledam – a mis΄o sitna
Kraj prizora mi pade kitna:
Kad budem ležô u duboku
Nehaju, tuzi ili praznoći,
Unutrašnjem nek sjaju oku,
Koje je sreća u samoći;
Nek srce žarom napuni se,
I neka pleše uz narcise.
